Day 12 - Germany

Today we headed to Germany! We got up early today and headed out so we could maximize our time at the Neuschwanstein Castle area. I was able to book tickets in advance for the Hohenstaufen Castle tour, but not the Neuschwanstein tour and that worked out to be just fine. The Hohenstaufen is the older of the two and has more original furniture and decor to look at inside. It was a great way to see how the Bavarian kings and queens lived in the 1800’s. And learn about the original medieval knights that lived there in the 12th Century before their castle was ransacked by Napoleon. After our tour we headed up the mountain to get a closer look at the Neuschwanstein castle exterior. The hike up was another steep climb but worth the view when we arrived!

We didn’t stay long in that area. We’ve found that the more touristy areas are tougher to navigate with the van and are just not as much fun as having nature to ourselves. So we headed south and found ourselves in Austria quickly. We kept driving until we were tired and found a camping spot on a farm near the Austria/Italy border. It’s a spot I found using a campsite finder app and it didn’t have much of a description so we didn’t know what we were getting into! After navigating our way up hairpin curves, we found it in the middle of nowhere with amazing views. The views are amazing and the farm had a rustic feel… with the sounds of cows all around and the smells of the manure/compost pile next to us. We found it unique and hilarious… and ultimately just a part of our stories we’ll tell forever. We do have a saying in the Sutton house… it’s all about the experience… all about the experience.
