Day 13 - Driving to Slovenia

The farm did not turn out to be a quiet night's rest. A cow was very upset in the barn next to us and some sort of machine ran all night. We got up early and headed out, thankful both for the experience and for moving on.

We meandered our way through the Dolomite area of north Italy and southern Austria. Some of the meandering was due to traffic. But some of our meandering was our doing, stopping to take pictures, driving slowly on hairpin curves, and stopping to experience European grocery stores along the way. It seemed like there was a castle or a church or a lake… or a lake with a castle and church around every curve! So we tried to savor the drive, every hairpin curve of it! Our destination was Bled, Slovenia and it should’ve taken 5 hours but it took 9 instead. I am the navigator along our journey and may or may not be known for taking scenic routes so the family often feels like we are lost. The drive down to Lake Bled was the perfect example of this. I’m sure we swerved our way through a tiny town that had most of the roads closed but we went through them anyway. We finally found our way down the mountain into the town of Bled and were again thankful for the experience and thankful to be moving on.

We were tired so when we found out that Campsite Bled where we wanted to stay was full, we wondered what in the world we would do. I went back to my (lifesaver) campsite app for plan B, a motor home parking area that turned out to be perfect! It had lots of campers closely parked together but offered the best wifi on our journey so far. And had electricity to plug into, as well as a place to empty and get new water. We’ll see how we sleep to know if we’ll stay another night!

After parking we headed to Lake Bled for dinner. It was gorgeous and honestly storybook-like! We found a restaurant with excellent views and even better food. We all felt like our long day of driving was worth it for this highly rewarding evening!
