Day 5 - Vezelay and Chamonix
After a good night’s sleep, we had coffee and fresh croissants from the campsite. Then we packed up and headed for the road. A friend recommended we go to Vezelay and we are so glad we did! The basilica of Mary Magdalene is a stunning church with sections of Roman architecture from 1104 and Gothic architecture from 1215. Not only did the architecture take our breath away, but we were in awe of the beautiful choir and prayers going on for Mass at the time we arrived. We silently sat with the worshippers for a while before going outside to admire the view of the Burgundy countryside. When Mass was finished we were able to walk around the entire inside of the basilica to admire more beauty and historical relics. The crypt below was the original church built below ground to protect the supposed remains of Mary Magdalene from Viking pillaging. It was truly an honor to be amongst such history. After a couple of hours of admiring the basilica and adorable town of Vezelay, we got back on the road to make our way to the French Alps.
We arrived in the Alps and stayed just outside of Chamonix-Mont Blanc. It was gorgeous! We enjoyed a charcuterie dinner and a glass of local rosé. The campsite we stayed in was Les 2 Glaciers and was beautiful with a great view! Tomorrow we’re headed to the top of Mt. Blanc (or close enough) if we get up early enough!
Lovely!!
ReplyDeleteSuch great pictures! I found that the churches in Germany and Austria were gorgeous when I was there in 2006.
