Day 7 - Switzerland

Today we went to Switzerland! With paraglider’s overhead, we loaded up and headed out from Les 2 Glaciers campground. We filled up with diesel, got a Switzerland vignette from the motorway station and we’re on our way. ‘Suisse vignette?’ 40 francs for some piece of mind that we’re actually allowed on the roads we’re traveling. We picked one up at a gas station next to the highway that we never got on. And learned there that Gazole does in fact not mean gasoline but diesel, something my google translation must have grown tired doublechecking. We ate lunch just over the border at a restaurant overlooking steep vineyards and a castle.

We drove from Chamonix down 100s of km of winding 2 lane (barely) roads through towns and over mountain passes. Tight roads would be an understatement. It felt like driving in fast forward, definitely not for everyone. It was a thoroughly enjoyable drive though the countryside for us though. We saw so much of beautiful Switzerland! It was hard to not stop everywhere to see everything but the way our trip is planned, we have to skip some things to get onto other things. It’s hard to pick and choose!

We drove to Kandersteg which is at the end of the Kander valley in the Bernese Oberland. The windy road in the valley went alongside the Berner Oberland express which would continue on through a tunnel to Italy. But we drove on through Kandersteg to find our campsite. We viewed 3 pitches and decided on a grassy one more secluded. We had 2 glaciers in view, 2 high peaks and one gondola running nearby. A quick rain came and over the valley and glaciers appeared 2 rainbows stunning to view. We found some spray painted signs for a lake and decided to make the unknown trek. We turned back before getting to the lake, but spotted a lot of waterfalls along the cliffs. Mango-passion fruit sorbet topped off the evening at the rendezvous cafe then back to the campsite (rendezvous campings) and off to bed where the rain helped to drift us off into sleep. Tomorrow we’ll go up the mountain and do a mountain coaster!
